i like.

the museum of naive art in croatia is pretty tight. this museum is a space that focuses on displaying works of art made by average folks that just so happen to be beautiful artists in their own right. these artists do not come from any prestigious artistic backgrounds per se, but they have the artistic ability better than many and are recognized with this space.

sometimes when i need some tasty patterns and delicious colors in my life i get inspired by the artists included in their museum. one of my favorite things about a majority of the artists you can see through their website is the patterning and grouping of colors. their recognition of space and form is spot on, even in stances where it may not seem like it. they paint from pure feeling. this is not necessarily an abstraction, just high consciousness.

lynd ward is pretty fantastical. he made some books using illustrations he carved and printed by hand. sometimes i'll see an artist that i feel so connected to. someone that inspires me and makes me wish i knew about them years ago. well, lynd ward makes me feel that way. i am obsessed. so much drama in each print that he makes, and they're pretty teeny too. you would be mesmerized.

he made a book called god's man that features the tale of a man who wishes to have great artistic powers in return for his soul. it's beautiful and haunting, and the graphic nature of the images really illuminates the power of what he makes. or really just the power that something so simple in its presentation can have on you. i would totally high five him for this book. until you get a chance to check out his stuff, feel free to get mesmerized up in here. not all of this is from god's man, but some of it.

serena malyon created these incredible tilt-shift style images for artcyclopedia. i've always been a big fan of tilt-shift style photography including fake photoshopped kind, but this kind of takes it to a whole new level. tilt-shift paintings? who knew! even though this might be considered by purists as destroying the original aura of van gogh's paintings, i think it really brings out the level of texture in impressionists paintings as a whole. plus this is just for fun. jeez. high fives to serena malyon. this is so freaking cool.

summer. it's gone. i'm okay with this. really i am. plus when fall begins that means i'll likely be on the internet more. i read so many books this summer it was awesome! but i forgot about stuff, and one was that i like the internet. i miss it and it fell to the wayside for books.

so anyway. one of my favorites this summer that i made a mental bookmark for was ryan walter wagner. he is super duper neat and does good work. he has like five million websites, but my favorite is his blog cuz you can spend hours on it. it's so extensive. his game is definitely hard to match! i love the photos he takes of places that are abandoned and void of people. so nice and ghosty.

reminds me that i need to dust off the old medium formats i have hoarded away in my cabinets. it's portrait time.

l.a. painter steven lopez knows how to really make colors vibrate and show them in full bloom. the latest in his after midnight series is the always beautiful alicia keys. what i love most about this group of works is his ability to make colors sing just like the women he paints. not an easy thing, but he makes it look effortless. juicy!

guess what's exciting? well one of the best things in a long time. I've been asked to submit a photo for compound gallery's september show called idealistically hypocritical. this show will be featuring 20 different artists of all kinds including photographers, illustrators, painters, designers and some filmmakers. i'm pretty freaking pleased with the talent already recruited and completely humbled to be part of this show! ever since the gallery opened i thought how cool it would be to show there. now is perfect. thanks friends! please be sure to be there on september 2nd, or we will most certainly not be pals anymore.

hi and hello. how are you today?

i walked to work in the morning dewey mist and it was so lovely. it's been nice and hot out, i welcomed the dew kisssed air today. mmmmhmmmm.

remember a couple months ago when it would not stop raining and the sun was trapped beyond the unrelenting clouds? well, i took a couple pictures during the sun-breaks. gosh, i remember how good it felt to have the sun on my face during those moments. let's cherish them, shall we?

oh lordy. this weekend i scored a home-run. no, really. i did. we played whiffle ball and i totally hit a home-run.

in other home-run terms: friday was a home-run because the beautiful, glorious, wonderful, magical, amazing erykah badu graced portland with her presence at the fix!! there had been much talk the last couple of weeks and it was confirmed friday at 6pm. oooowweeee!! what a nite. georgia anne muldrow and dudley perkins were amazing enough, but with badu? get outta town! it was so damn fonky i still am on clouds. words can't describle her. she is the shit. that's all there is to it! life is complete. i can die now. here's a clip from the show. be jealous.

gunta stolzl was a master at all things textiles. kind of amazing that some people have the knack for weaving and creating pretty colors. she was part of the bauhaus and that makes her even more special! one of the first ladies to dominate that area of art. fantasticalness.

it's neat how a lot of current artists i see channel the same type of patterns and colors as stolzl, i think it's an artists subconscious at work and maybe not a direct influence? maybe? whatever.

if i got any kind of rug like this i'm certain my cat would puke on it.

i have a super long reading list and i'm trying to catch up on stuff so my brain doesn't go dumb. right now i'm re-reading concerning the spiritual in art by kandinsky. it's short and it's good. you should try it.

one of the best things of summer is the understated quiet. it is a contented peaceful quiet that hides in between laughter, under smooth shining rocks in the sun. it is in the warmth that swirls in and out of eyes. the simple things of summer are the most cherished, the ones i miss the most. i cannot wait to sit in the quiet of the forest surrounded by warmth and the season that love creates. happy to be alive.

betsy walton is my new favorite. during these days that are filled only with dark clouds and warm rain, it's so good to find inspiration in something magical like her paintings. she is also a mythical storyteller, which you can get into at her blog. her work is so dream-like and vivid-filled with rich color; and along with the shapes that accentuate it - pretty fucking magical i'd say!

i actually found her via a brand spanking new collective website called arrow to arrow which features mostly portland artists, but has a few other fine folks in there as well. very very nice.

i'm trying to fill my eyes with as much color and imagery as possible until the summer comes. it feels like it's never going to get here, but i have faith. oh yes i do. reminds me a little of that story 'all summer in a day' by ray bradbury when the summer only came for one fleeting day. i felt so bad for that girl, margot. what a bumout.

anyhow, yay summer!

horay for today. not only is it muthalovin’ tuesday, but one of the dudeladies is back today! carlton left us to go to the american school in D.C. and become even more magical with her painting skills. to celebrate carlton’s return, I vote for cupcakes and tea. except instead of tea, we’ll have to drank wine or something. maybe we can have tea, it’s whatever. as long as we can have some yummy cupcakes and what not. duh.

carlie leagjeld is totally magical! the work she has been doing are some really beautiful mixed media on paper and canvas, as well as small installations. all of it is to represent the unseen in the world around us. up close, her work has intense layers of texture and color that communicates with different levels of how we see; not just how we see the visual work but to explore the environment where we live and how we think. they are quite lovely. i even have a teeny one inside my art cabinet. inspiration. so glad to have you back in portland.

so, the last few nites of sleep i wake up and all i can think of is henry darger. it's super weird, but normal cuz i have had one of his books at my disposal.

the other nite i dreamt that i was on this huge broad beach. the sun was shining and the wind was gentle. beside me was my mother. my birth mother. i wrote her a letter earlier that evening. i wanted to know what she was wearing and if she wore turquoise about her neck. she sat with her toes in the sand and her hair was really long. turquoise was the only color i recall about her. we sat and then i looked down and i was showing her henry darger.

i need a different book for real. but i do love him a lot. it baffles me that one person can live such a solitary life and not be found out about until it is past their time. better late than never i guess.

this morning i was drinking tea in my kitchen and i got to thinking how much i love it in there. it's my favorite place to be in my studio. i do believe it is becaue of the fact that i have many chotchkies living on the shelves and stuff, they're so cute! how can i not love being in there?

also it's cuz i have some neat prints that i've acquired over the years that i've been putting up lately. one of my favorites is a tiny card i picked up from the pony club gallery at the everett street lofts. to me, it's the most solid spot on that block. they always have the goods.

anyway, jennifer parks is my favorite. she makes all kinds of neat drawings and prints of animals, ghosts and dreams. she's neat.

i'm really in the mood for some coconut cream pie. and some treasure hunting at goodwill. somehow i will make this happen today.

a while back i went to a far away land called 'eastern oregon.' it was pretty fucking magical. i met these dudeladies on the way, it turns out they were in some psych rock band. i don't know about you, but i was pretty amped about that. we visited the pendleton brothels, chanted to the wind, drank drank and played cards. it was serious business like what.

this weekend i walked a lot. love was a common theme in my mind. the blossoming springtime beauty around me is but a small reminder of how much life is to be loved and cherished. i spotted a heart shaped leaf on the ground and i was really excited. finding a heart shaped anything is pretty much the best. but then i realized it was an ivy leaf and all them things are heart shaped. ha. nonetheless. it was pretty fucking magical.

hells yes. toshiko okanoue has an exhibit that just opened this week at charles hartman gallery. horay an hallelujah! i feel like i haven't been this excited for an exhibit in quite some time. toshiko okanoue does surreal photographic collage and it is so beautiful. kind of makes me want to fall over and die. i'm not even joking around you guys. so good. definitely a two paws up type deal.

the exhibit is up on the charles hartman website, but it's probably best to go see it in person. i'll even go with you! we can get ice cream afterward. horay for ice cream! it will be showing through may first. aught ten.

also, yay for accessorizing. what would people do without the best of accessories? i just don't know. accessories are my raison d'être. why, just this past weekend when i was treasure hunting for frames, i totally found some neat old gold jewelery. this made me one happy girl, let me tell you.

this is one of my favorite lines of jewelery. macha keeps it classy.

i actually need this. no lie. it's a black bear tooth. i know. i'm jealous, too.

i love the rockwell collection. the 'stone' is made of metal then plated in silver or gold. so tight.

this morning on my way to work i was blessed by a couple glorious things. firstly, i found this really cool antique looking watchface! i haven't found a treasure like that in a long time and it made me gleeful. then then a few blocks later i found myself a muthafukkin quarter. oh yes. laundry. that's what i'm talking about. things are looking up.

my lovely friend ragen fykes, 1/2 of M64, has collaborated with the park and keelay of the bay area to create grillade. those kids are working on some full length stuff. i thought it was a 7", but this baby was wrong! anyway, it sounds pretty hot.

i'm totally obsessed with this movie i saw last nite. it was literally one of the greatest movies i have ever seen. i feel blessed to have been able to see this film. so amazing. so. amazing. i mean, look at the dang movie poster. it is proof of greatness.

horay for my beautiful, glorious lc-a. i finally got my first test rolls of this baby. they are test rolls cuz i accidentally exposed one, and didn't load the film correctly on the other. does not care. (except the exposed roll was an eight dollar roll, so that was lame).

rhettmatic and houseshoes brought the house down. i'm talking about some mind blowing stuff. they both played a lot dilla produced songs as well as songs that he sampled to make said songs. wtf. who do these guys think they are?! so amazing. so amazing. aaaaaah. i stayed up quite late, but its all good because i was at church. it was a two paws up sort of nite.

hello. i am an email hoarder.

this morning i went through 191 'drafts' i had in my gmail. what the hell. i have no idea how it happened. i turned around, then four years later ... BOOM. who knows.

at any rate, even though the process was quite arduous i unearthed many delightful items. artists that i once knew of but that had been long since forgotten. love letter to boys i hate (and am glad i did not send). lorca and neruda and hafiz. many things. it was a joyous thing.

one of these ancient artifacts was olaf hajek. please peep game on his site, for it is a treasure trove. he also has a pretty new book out called flowerhead! quite lovely. quite.

the only thing on my mind this morning was beautiful, glorious springtime! even though that groundhog guy says otherwise, it smelled like cherry blossoms outside and it was oh so lovely.

this weekend i drank a lot and ate a lot. in between booze comas i managed to get to frances may and saw something magical. magical, meaning beautiful and not affordable for little alex, but i digress.

aesa jewelery makes some amazing things. what caught my attention were the necklaces that look like spinal columns. hot shit. their website has a plethora of other items that are just as lovely to look at. i didn't ask for price points because i didn't want to have a heart attack about it. i'm sure it's more than my rent though cuz they also sell this line at barney's. beautiful, nonethless. this is from the machine de terre collection.

barbie is by far the strangest most curious toy for girls that i ever owned. i remember my first barbie. it was a peaches n' cream one, and i wanted it soooooooo bad. i was really bummed when i left her dress outside overnight and then a snail slimed his way across her beautiful dress. oh wait, that was rainbow brite's dress. same thing.
